New "Notes" mode in Planimeter on iOS.

iOS version of Planimeter has been updated with a new Notes Mode introduced in Android before.
Now with Planimeter on your iPhone or iPad you can label each pin with a message, edit it, save and share via  KML or CSV files. KML files with notes, created in the app on one platform (iOS or Android),  can be opened and edited on the other one.

With this feature extra information added to your measurements and mapping  results should help you with better field planning and records management.

How to drop a pin with a note:

- switch to Notes Mode

- add pins on the map as in Touch Mode

- write a note in the popup dialog

Labels above the pins are visible only when Notes Mode is selected. Simply touch a note over a pin in order to edit or erase text.

Enjoy the app and let us know if you have any feedback!

  2. Touch and hold your finger on the screen
  3. Keep you finger still and push your device underneath. See YouTube demo
  4. Repeat points 2-3 till the measurement is completed (the red line aligned with an end point of the measurement)
  5. See result at lower left corner "L=45.47" (see image below)
    • Touch on this view allows to set offset
    • Long Touch - reset measurement
How  Tape Measure mode works

Tip for advanced users: you can also slide your finger towards the red line if you are moving measured object along. In this case you don't have to align red line with any specific point, your relative finger motions will be measured in selected units and accumulated until measurement reset.

[iOS] Pupil Distance Meter Simple Edition: quick and simple Pupillary Distance measure

Pupil Distance Meter is a tool for quick PD measurements using a rear or front camera on your mobile device and any standard card (e.g. gift card, id card, credit card, etc)

Simple Edition of the app has simple measurement procedure that allows you to achieve more accurate and consistent measurement results.

Pupil Distance Meter Simple Edition.

How to use:
  1. Take a face picture with a reference card (see picture below how to hold the card properly)
  2. Mark eye pupils with the white ruler
  3. Mark a reference card length with the blue ruler
  4. See PD result  at the top

For accurate and repeatable measurements you would need to hold a reference card next to your eye corner on the left or right side of your face. The card  has to be on the same vertical plane with your eye pupils and be parallel to the camera / display.

How to hold a reference card properly

For the best result do not bring the camera close to your face and keep it at arm's length or farther. Don't focus your eyes on the camera when taking a picture, try to look "through" the device - by doing this you can avoid bringing additional error when fixing  pupils at one point.
As a final step make sure your PD result is within normal measurement range:  50 - 78 mm for adults (41- 55 mm for kids). If it's not, please check the above instructions thoroughly and try again.

If you have questions about the app or have improvement suggestions, please contact us.

What is my face shape?

Have you ever had a question "What is my face shape"? Here is the answer...
Face Shape Meter, a simple and easy tool for identifying your face shape from your picture, has been recently published on the App Store.

This app will help you to find out your face shape quickly, without using any additional measurement tools and techniques.

Knowing your face shape can be useful in many different areas. For example, you would need to know your shape of face for finding “the right” haircut or hairstyle, sun glasses that fit you well, the best makeup for your face, or even wig or hat that suits you best.
How it works:

  1. make or upload picture
  2. outline / measure your face with special contour as shown on screenshots
  3. press Show Face Shape button and see the result

Tips:
  • For best result use a picture with neutral face expression, where your head is directed straight to the camera. Turning your head might affect the final result.
  • Before measurements make sure your hairline is visible

[iOS] Partometer3D - camera tool for measurements on photos.

The first version of Partometer3D app for iOS is now available on the App Store.

The main goal of this app is to perform measurements on pictures taken from any view angle (parallel  or not parallel to a camera). Please check this presentation for more info.

The app also allows users to do measurements on stretched pictures. The app requires to set a measurement plane using any rectangular object of known size or w/r ratio.

If W/H Ratio option is used for setting the measurement plane, additional Reference Object Length (ROL) has to be used to set a scale of this plane. See an example of using W/R ratio and ROL for measurements in our previous post about Partometer3D on Android.

The following video is a short demonstration of measurements with Partometer3D and accuracy test for length, angle, circle diameter values:

In the demo video A4 sheet is used to define the measurement plane. Width of the sheet is measured in the Length Mode to see the measurement accuracy in this plane. Then Angle Mode demonstrated with angle and sheet sides measurements. Diameter of a circle (72 mm) is measured in the Circle Mode using special 3-point ruler for bounding circular objects in the plane.

If you have questions about the app or have improvement suggestions, we will be glad to hear from you in comments below or by e-mail.

SolarMeter - solar photovoltaic planner and analyzer available on Android and iOS

The first version of SolarMeter app for iPhone and iPad users is available on the App Store now. The similar application is also available for Android devices from Google Play.

The application helps people, interested in using free source of energy  - sunlight, to check solar potential of their roof or land, how much solar power is available at specific location throughout the year, to estimate how much energy a photo-voltaic system is able to produce per month or year.

The app also offers area converter, that supports many different units,  and contains tips on how to estimate roof area using map and Planimeter app.
Simple "Costs Calculator" allows users to compare changes in energy bills with and without using solar cell panels.

iOS version features:
  • Real-time solar power calculation based on current location, panel/device orientation and panel/device tilt**
  • Solar Power and Energy calculation for different periods of time: day, month, year
  • Ideal (calculated) and experimental statistical solar data (offline) available
  • Sensor based inputs for orientation and tilt
  • Current location search using GPS and Network
  • Graph/Plot 2D data presentation
  • Solar panel efficiency control
  • Bill and Saving estimation based on user input (energy monthly or annual consumption).
  • Roof tilt angle measurement
  • Roof area calculation based on Planimeter* measurements
  • Metric and Imperial units
* the app has to installed to be able to use it for measurements.
** Make sure your Time Zone settings are correct and you use it in portrait orientation.

[iOS] Pupil Distance Meter: accurate pupillary distance measurements.

Accuracy Test Results
Pupil Distance Meter is a tool for PD measurements using a camera on your mobile device.

iOS version of the app uses improved approach, which allows you to achieve more accurate and consistent measurement results.

On the left you can see results of accuracy tests taken with Pupil Distance Meter on iPhone.

In accordance with  the measurement procedure, two successive pictures were taken from different distances to get an average result. Then pupils and the credit card were carefully marked with the special rulers on the screen. As soon as the layout of the features were confirmed with BOTH switch controls at the bottom right corner, correct PD distance were calculated and shown at the top of the screen.

As you can see on the picture, the result from the app is very close to the true data measured with a usual ruler.

You can achieve the same good results, if you thoroughly follow the instructions and tips from one of our previous posts about Pupil Distance Meter on iOS.

If you have questions about the app or have improvement suggestions, we would like to hear from you in the comments below or by e-mail.

[iOS] Partometer - camera measure tool for measuring on pictures and photos: Angle Mode improved.

Angle Mode in Partometer v1.4
Partometer update v1.4 brings the ability to measure angles with two separate rulers. It can be useful for measurement of angles that are not visible or partially visible on a picture. Also it comes handy for pipe bend measurements as shown in the picture.

How it works:
- go to Settings
- activate Independent Rulers in Angle Mode and Save
- move each edge of the angle independently
- see Angle = ... result even if measured angle is not visible on the screen.

Important condition for accurate measurements here is to keep object plane parallel to the camera plane to avoid picture distortion.

This video from Android version of the app demonstrates the idea of angle measurements with independent rulers:
