[iOS] Partometer3D - camera tool for measurements on photos.
The first version of Partometer3D app for iOS is now available on the App Store.
The main goal of this app is to perform measurements on pictures taken from any view angle (parallel or not parallel to a camera). Please check this presentation for more info.
The app also allows users to do measurements on stretched pictures. The app requires to set a measurement plane using any rectangular object of known size or w/r ratio.

The app also allows users to do measurements on stretched pictures. The app requires to set a measurement plane using any rectangular object of known size or w/r ratio.
If W/H Ratio option is used for setting the measurement plane, additional Reference Object Length (ROL) has to be used to set a scale of this plane. See an example of using W/R ratio and ROL for measurements in our previous post about Partometer3D on Android.
In the demo video A4 sheet is used to define the measurement plane. Width of the sheet is measured in the Length Mode to see the measurement accuracy in this plane. Then Angle Mode demonstrated with angle and sheet sides measurements. Diameter of a circle (72 mm) is measured in the Circle Mode using special 3-point ruler for bounding circular objects in the plane.
If you have questions about the app or have improvement suggestions, we will be glad to hear from you in comments below or by e-mail.

How-To: do measurements using camera and common objects of known W/H ratio and length in "Partometer3D - camera measure"
Presentation about Partometer3D.
Task: measure pencil accurately using square wooden tile and credit card.
How to measure:
I use square wooden tile to define the measurement plane. I don't know its dimensions, but I know that it's SQUARE:
- I go to Preferences and select Measurement Plane as Custom Plane.
- Then in How plane is defined I select Only W/H Ratio.
- Then in Custom Plane W/H Ratio I enter 1.0 (square shape).
Now with this settings I can define measurement plane using the wooden tile. I need to set the scale for the measurement plane in selected units (mm). To do this I place a credit card on the plane and use its LONG side as a reference (ROL).

Then I set ROL size in Preferences:
Now I am ready to measure:
- bound the wooden tile with reference box on the screen.
- use blue ruler (ROL) to mark the credit card length
- measure the pencil with white ruler!
Please note, in this example if I use a wooden tile of known size I don't need ROL for measurements - the tile would define the plane and scale automatically as soon as we select corresponding option in Preferences and enter its dimensions.
Note:
1. Use option menu button to open Preferences in the menu. On some devices it appears as a "..." (three dots) button as you can see on the screenshots in the upper right corner. You might have a problem with this button on Samsung devices, in this case please check our post:

2."ROL" and " W / H" boxes in the lower left corner are touchable and you can do SHORT or LONG touches as a shortcut for plane and ROL settings.
3. Measurement accuracy depends on how accurate you mark your references. Please select bigger reference objects to get better result. In this presentation sheet of paper is a good choice for measurements of small objects (screws, rings, etc) on it.
- Using ROL is selected automatically.
- Touch Reference Object Length and select Credit card (Long Side) from the list.

Partometer3D - camera measure. Measurements with your camera on photos in any defined plane in 3D.
Partometer3D is a handy tool for object dimensions measurements. It can be used as a ruler or tape measure, or remote measurement device.
This app allows user to make measurements in defined plane in 3D . The measurement plane / object plane does not have to be parallel to the camera plane. It expands number of situations where application can be used. For example, big objects now can be measured by taking a picture at some angle (from a side), objects and distances that are difficult to reach can be measured as well.
The app has following important and distinctive features:
- measure in any selected plane in 3D space
- add/delete any number of measurement lines/rulers
- values assigned to each ruler line
- measure objects in different directions
- save and share you measurement
- find object ratios, if you don't not need absolute measurements
- compare object parts to each other
- use custom and predefined reference objects
- automatic reference object fine alignment using image processing
Partometer3D uses a phone/tablet camera and any available object with known size as a reference to perform measurement. To define the measurement plane a rectangular object (e.g. sheet of paper, credit card, custom object) is used. Image processing is used for automatic edge alignment with the reference object.
The app shows measurement results in different units: meters, millimeters, centimeters, feet, inches based on user settings. It also calculate dimensions of the object in relative units with respect to the reference object (ROL).
There is an option to make a picture and work with the still image instead of live camera view. Picture Load feature is also implemented to work with any picture from your photo gallery. Zoom View feature helps to align object boundaries accurately. Partomter3D can be very useful if you need to measure dimensions, where a simple ruler or measure tape is difficult to apply.
